As a parking platform, we know that motor vehicles contribute significantly to carbon emissions. While we always encourage environmentally friendly travel, we understand that many don’t have that option. By partnering with One Tree Planted, we hope
to give back to our community by helping our Renters and Hosts reduce their carbon footprint.
How Does Spacer Help the Environment?
Did you know that 68% of land in cities is devoted to parking spots? A study by Planetizen found that less than a third of our urban cities and non-residential areas were dedicated to community facilities such as parks, libraries, social services and playgrounds.
In addition to these parking lots, our own research shows that 92% of Americans have access to a private driveway, car spot or garage. The cherry on top is that 41% of these parking spots are empty for 4 days of the week or more. In fact, across the U.S., there are 8 parking spots available for every car.
At Spacer, our goal is to create smart and sustainable cities. In addition to our partnership with One Tree Planted, we’ve partnered with car sharing companies such as ZipCar to help our Renters and Hosts make the most of their existing assets, and have set our sights on the future of EV.
Despite this, recent research by INRIX has found that drivers waste on average 64 hours a year searching for available street or hourly parking. That equates
to nearly $1,400 per driver in wasted time, fuel and emissions. It turns out that parking isn’t just putting a strain on people’s pockets, it’s also putting enormous strain on the environment.
We believe that by connecting these two groups of people, drivers searching for parking and property owners with excess space, we can reduce inefficiencies in the community. By pre-booking monthly parking,
you decrease the time spent circling the block and as result, lower greenhouse gas emissions. By renting out your excess space, we can reduce the number of parking lots built and give those areas back to communities.
Trees reduce the risk of floods and landslides
According to USDA, one hundred mature trees can reduce the runoff caused by rainfall by up to 100,000 gallons. Their intricate root systems act like filters, removing pollutants and slowing down the water’s absorption into the soil.
80% of the world’s terrestrial plants and animals live in forests.
A single tree can be home to hundreds of species of insects, fungi, moss, mammals and plants. Different species of trees provide different kinds of food and shelter to accommodate
for a wide range of habitats.
Over 120 natural remedies in rainforests can be used as medicines.
Not only do they provide shade and have been proven to reduce stress, several tree species also have medicinal properties. Natural remedies can be derived from many different parts of the tree including the leaves, flowers, fruits or even within the bark.
1.6 billion people rely on forests for their livelihoods.
From arborists to loggers and researchers, the job opportunities provided by the forestry industry are endless. But we don’t just rely on trees for work. Sustainable tree farming also provides timber to build homes, shelters and wood to burn for cooking or heating.
Trees can reduce ambient temperatures by up to 46 degrees.
The process of storing harmful greenhouse gasses like carbon dioxide in their trunks, branches and leaves, and then releasing oxygen back into the atmosphere, helps to cool the planet.
We couldn’t do it without you.
By choosing Spacer, not only are you reducing carbon emissions, you’re also helping us to give space back to local communities. We’re closer to our dream of smarter, greener and more sustainable cities, thanks to you.
